Feeding Your Rabbit

The pet rabbit has descended from the European wild rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus and is therefore adapted to thrive on a grass-based diet. The more the rabbits diet is varied from 100% mixed meadow grass grazing the greater the possibility of health problems such as dental disease, gastrointestinal problems, fly-strike and other related problems.


A Rabbit's Diet

Most rabbits will eat their own body size in hay each day and it is important in helping to keep teeth worn and providing fibre to prevent gastrointestinal disease. Fresh produce including leafy vegetables high in cellulose is also good for dental wear and should be fed at a rate of approximately one handful morning and evening. Good quality commercial rabbit pellets ensure rabbits receive the correct vitamins and minerals but should not be fed exclusively. As a guide feed one tablespoon of pellets once daily for rabbits under 3.5kg and two tablespoons once daily for rabbits over 3.5kg.


Keeping Your Rabbit Healthy

Rabbits are prey species and as such are very good at hiding signs of ill health; it is therefore vitally important that rabbits are checked daily during feeding times. Rabbitโ€™s can also become easily stressed which can affect their normal feeding habits and health. Stressors can include change of housing, change of diet, transport, extremes of temperature, predators (including pet cats and dogs), loss of a companion or aggression from a dominant rabbit.


Summer Months

Urine and faecal scalding can initiate blow fly strike as well as unhygienic living quarters therefore it is important to be vigilant and check daily especially in the summer months. Fly repellents are available at the surgery but the underlying cause of urine and faecal scalding should be investigated by a veterinary surgeon.

Pre-op instructions

Thank you for booking {{patientName}} in for surgery with us. Please ensure {{patientName}} is starved from 9 pm the night before but can have water until the morning of the procedure. {{patientName}} may be sleepy for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure so it is best that they have a relaxed evening in a warm spot.

{{patientName}} may have a clipped patch on his/her front leg from where we have placed an intravenous catheter. {{patientName}} will be fed as soon as he/she is awake from their anaesthetic so they may not be hungry at home in the evening.


Pre-op instructions - cat

Hi, {{clientFirstName}}

The night before please give {{patientName}} their dinner the evening as normal and then do NOT give any food to {{patientName}} after that. You can continue to provide water ad lib until they come in.


Cats like {{patientName}} should be kept in overnight and provided with a litter tray.


The morning of the procedure:

Do not feed {{patientName}} anything in the morning. This is to reduce the possibility of any vomiting or regurgitation while under the anaesthetic.


We may need to contact you during the procedure or to discuss results. PetsApp is our preferred communication method - please ensure you have notifications enabled.


On arrival at {{clinicName}} you will be asked to sign a consent form. Please read this form carefully and advise of any other treatment required whilst your pet is under the anaesthetic e.g. dental, microchipping, nail clipping, grooming, ear cleaning etc.


Pre-operative blood tests - This test allows us to check your animal does not have any pre-existing liver or kidney problems that we may not be aware of especially if they are in the early stages and have no symptoms. The test also assesses their red blood cell count to ensure they are not anaemic. We particularly recommend pets over 7 years old to have a pre-anaesthetic profile which costs ยฃ72.00.


Discharge:

You will be able to settle your bill and receive discharge instructions for {{patientName}} right here on PetsApp. And you will be able to collect {{patientName}} any time after 5.30pm.


Please keep a close eye on your pet the evening they come home from their procedure. Message us on here if any questions. You will be asked to provide a picture of the post-surgical wound through PetsApp 2 days after surgery.
